Dance of Indians at Mission in San José x New California between 1803 and 1807::

Possibly the earliest known image of Mission Indians in native costumes at Mission San José, California. Six dark-skinned people with elaborately painted and tattooed bodies, wearing native attire and headdresses, dance in clearing near river. This is how the Natives of California looked in the early 1800s.

Artist: Tilesius von Tilenau, Wilhelm Gottlief (1769-1857), German
